Semaine européenne de la mobilité! 16-22 sept 2007.

Pour son tout premier grand festival de films écolos qui aura lieu du 17 au 23 septembre 2007, l'association artistique Le Barbizon à Paris organise une soirée thématique sur le vélo ce 18 sept, en compagnie de J. Desquilbet de Vélorution, un organisme parisien qui défend la place des vélos et des cyclistes en ville. Aura lieu la GRANDE 1ère européenne du film : une chance de relaxer en regardant les images et les anecdotes d'un voyage intense et riche en découvertes mais toujours à l'échelle et à vitesse humaine. La semaine sera remplie de plein d'autres films écolos (voir le programme ci-haut) et autres activités intéressantes... faites-en le tour et amusez-vous bien!

Quel travail ! Le mixing audio est presque complètement terminé... il manque juste 2 morceaux de musique à insérer aux bons endroits. J'attends que les musiciens aient le temps de les enregistrer! Pas facile, le vie d'étudiant... toujours "occuppé" à faire la fête, et même des fois étudier.

En attendant, j'ai commencé le sous-titrage Eng-Fra. Comme vous savez sûrement, mes compagnons de voyage sont anglophones... et ça prend un peu de traduction et sous-titrage pour qu'on se fasse comprendre de tous et toutes dans le monde francophone! Bonne nouvelle: en une solide soirée de 8 heures presque sans arrêt.. j'ai presque terminé cette étape très technique mais, ma foi, assez plaisante! Plus que quelques semaines! Je pense que quelques DVD "avant-première" vont peut-être commencer à "fuir" de mon laptop dans les prochains jours, mais ça reste à confirmer!

Subtitling! My favourite video activity. And it's going reeeeal well! I'm waiting for two audio tracks.. when the busy-body musicians finally get some free time to record their tracks. It ain't easy being a student, i sympathise with the fellows! In the meanwhile, I've begun subtitling the english audio into french... (because we spoke english most of the way) and soon i'll be doing just the opposite: translating the french audio into english subtitles so that you guys can make good sense of those parts! The result will be a truly bilingual flick for all to see.

Subtitling is fastidious work, to be sure... and after spending an entire chunck of 8 hours at my computer, i realised that the work was already about half done! Another solid session, and after recording some more english narrative.. it'll be done! And here's an inside tip: a few pre-release DVD copies might start making their way around pretty soon, but that information has yet to be confirmed!

The cutting/editing is finished!!! My skillful associates and I are now working on fitting some good home-made music in the film. Takuma has taken on the challenge of making ambient sounds for a really cool moonlit camping scene and perhaps a few others. J-F is trying out some custom sounds for intro scenes and Guillaume is taping some rad fast-paced guitar for those high-speed kinda scenes.

We're all working hard on putting it all together and we want to get it done within 2 months! Ambitious? Let's give it a shot!

Le montage vidéo est terminé!!! Mes talentueux collaborateurs et moi sommes en train de produire de la music faite maison pour complémenter certaines scènes du film. Takuma s'est chargé de musique ambiante pour des scènes dans la forêt, en camping au clair de lune. J-F fait des sons pour les scènes d'intro (pour chaque province) et Guillaume fait un bout de guitare vraiment rapide pour des scènes de descente folle à 60 km/h!

On travaille pas mal fort et on cherche encore de la musique... mais on pense avoir tout fini d'ici deux mois! Pas pire, non? On essaie ça!

Back to work! I don't know about you, but I had a pretty rad summer and now i'm back in the driver's seat of OLC for the final stretch of the editing process... beautiful closing scenes shot on Vancouver Island, then translation, then putting the movie to DVD. I hope you all had an awesome summer. It's good to be back, and i'll keep ya posted!

De retour! Quel été magnifique! J'espère que vous en avez profité acotté aussi. De retour au montage de Une auto de moins... il reste quelques minutes de montage (scènes tournées à Tofino, sur l'île de Vancouver), ensuite la traduction.. et après on passera à la production DVD et... la première! Mais on y est pas encore tout à fait et je vous garderai au courant! =)

Les vacances !

Hope you are all having a great summer! Over here, the editing is done all the way to Vancouver Island, which means now only a few kilometres lie between the movie and the end of the adventure on Tofino's Pacific shore! It's almost finished! After that i'll work on the narrative, lots of last-minute stuff, a DVD cover, making the movie available on the file transfer networks and then BANG: the big premiere somewhere real cool (probably a rooftop garden) and free download for the rest of you! But until then, summer is at its peak and i'm taking a month off with my girlfriend so we can enjoy it to its full extent, far away from the precise and very finnicky business of movie editing! Have a wicked summer, wear sunscreen, and see you all on the flipside.

J'espère que vous passez tous et toutes un excellent été. J'ai terminé le montage jusqu'à l'île de Vancouver et c'est donc presque terminé!! Il ne reste plus que quelques kilomètres d'ici jusqu'à la fin du périple sur les rives du Pacifique. Ensuite il y aura le narratif, plusiquers petits fignolements de dernière minute, la préparation d'un coffret de DVD, la diffusion sur les réseaux d'échange libres et... BANG: la grande première!! Mais d'ici là, l'été bat son plein et je pars en vacances pendant un mois, loin du travail passionnant mais aussi très précis et exigeant qu'est le montage vidéo! Alors vous aussi, mettez de la crème solaire, profitez-en au maximum, et à la prochaine!

Okanagan, sous soleil de plomb

Enfin arrivé au B.C. parmi ses montagnes rugueuses et sauvages, ses lacs cristallins, et ses hectares de vergers fruitiers en plein désert! Je parle bel et bien de la vallée de l'Okanagan, qui acceuille chaque année cette horde de voyageurs libres d'esprit, venus ceuillir les fruits au soleil, camper sous les étoiles et fumer le pot autour des feux de camp à la manière des "fruit-pickers" bohèmes d'un peu partout dans le monde. Je me demande encore si les locaux finissent par s'habituer à ce déferlement annuel de jeunes gens sur lesquels leur économie agricole dépend entièrement. En tout cas, le temps des cerises surtout, la vallée de l'Okanagan est tout un party!

C'est à peu près aujourd"hui que les premières ceuilleuses et les premiers ceuilleurs vont arriver à Osoyoos pour y ramasser les cerises, et ensuite migrer vers le nord quelques semaines après. En l'espace de quelques jours, tout le monde se passe le mot et part pour Naramata ou Kelowna. J'ai beaucoup de vidéo de cet endroit merveilleux, assez pour faire un film entier sur ces gens trippants avec lesquels j'ai vécu au moins un mois, alors ce sera amusant à parcourir et sélectionner que les meilleurs bouts pour vous!

Finally in B.C. surrounded by its lush wild mountains, shimmering lakes and acres of fruit orchards - in the middle of a desert! Of course, i speak of the Okanagan Valley, which plays host every summer to thousands of eager young bohemian fruit-pickers who for some reason are almost entirely francopĥone. This annual migration is a given and the local fruit industry depends on it for its cherries, apricots, cucumbers, apples, grapes and everything else under the sun! Many of these colourful people have been coming every year for the low-stress summer lifetime: short (but sometimes hard) days' work and of course an abundance of sun, sex and fun.

About this time every year is when this joyful bunch of hippies, punks, college kids and career pickers descend on southern part of the valley. I have lots of video from the Okanagan; enough to make an entire film about this awesome place! It will be a fun challenge to go trough it all and pick only the finest cuts for this project. I'd also like to thank some kind individual in Osoyoos for helping me recover some of the footage I thought had been lost forever. Respect!

Tornados, storms and buffalos

I don't even count the hours I spend in front my my editing program anymore, but the movie is progressing at the rate of at least a couple minutes a day and that's not at all bad! I edited the Alberta footage in just about 2 days; there wasn't more than 20 or so minutes it was pretty stunning!

We got rain... lots of rain: the Old Man River in Lethbridge was past flood stage when I got there. (Unfortunately for prairie folks, climate change models predict an increase in average temperature and rainfall between now and the turn of this century, meaning more frequent floods and severe weather. Source: Met Office of the Hadley Centre (UK): Climate Change, Rivers and Rainfall. December 2005). Big black clouds sent lightning roaring and cracking across the sky, and I even filmed a tornado tearing through a field, luckily some ten kilometres or so away. It was an awesome sight, scary but pretty funny when my English friend Josh said, as I filmed: "We're being like tourists, aren't we? We're standing here looking at a tornado and in a minute it'll be us in the air. We're gonna end up in Manitoba or somewhere."

The very next day I was back on the road, bound for the mountains and facing the most ferocious wind I had ever encountered, which I've been told roars across the plains almost constantly in that area, picking up speed as it curls across the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountain Range. This didn't go unnoticed to the clever folks who installed a great bunch of graceful-looking wind turbines in that area, sticking it somewhat to the local oil industry.

The town of Frank, Alberta, nestled right in the Rockies, was almost completely leveled when a huge chunk of Turtle Mountain came roaring down upon it in the morning hours of April 29, 1903. The natives had long avoided the area surrounding what they called "The Mountain that Walks". Now the town has been rebuilt a little further West, under another flank of the mountains which seems just as precarious as the one which is now spread across the Old Man River valley. I questioned the wisdom of this planning decision as I biked past the great house-sized boulders that had come careening across the valley like giant ball bearings not more than 100 years ago. Our collective memory is often very short (not at all on Earth's terms), and it seems we often forget about and repeat past mistakes. On the other hand, I guess it's also hard to leave home, and I wish the current residents of Frank a much better fate than the one met by at least 76 of their predecessors almost a century ago.

Je ne compte même plus les heures passées devant mon moniteur, les écouteurs scellées sur les oreilles, mais le montage progresse à raison de quelques minutes par jour et je trouve ça pas pire du tout! J'ai complété le montage de l'Alberta en l'espace de quelques jours seulement. Il n'y avait pas beaucoup de vidéo, mais qu'il était CAPTIVANT!

On a eu de la pluie, beaucoup de pluie: La rivière Old Man était inondée quand je suis arrivé à Lethbridge, dans le sud de l'Alberta. Malheuresement pour les Albertains, les modèles climatiques prédisent une augmentation de la température et des précipitations d'ici la fin du siècle... ce qui veut aussi dire des inondations plus fréquentes et beaucoup plus de temps bizarre, généralement. Juste pour dire, entre deux cumulonimbus chargés d'éclairs, on a même vu une tornade frayant son chemin dans les champs, à une dizaine de kilomêtres de notre point de vue. C'était un peu effrayant mais drôle lorsque mon ami anglais Josh a dit, avec raison, à portée de mon micro: "On est commes des touristes, n'est-ce pas? On regarde la tornade sans trop se dire que bientôt, ce sera nous dans les airs, en route vers le Manitoba."

Le jour suivant, j'étais en route vers les montagnes, faisant face au vent le plus acharné que j'aie jamais vu. Paraît-il qu'il souffle presque constamment là-bas, balayant les plaines de toute sa force en descendant le flanc Est des Rocheuses. Pas dupes, les Albertains y ont installé des centaines d'éoliennes, faisant en quelque sorte un pied de nez à leur richissime industrie pétrolière.

Bien dissimulée dans les rocheuses, la ville de Frank avait été presque complètement rasée par un immense glissement de montagne survenu un matin en avril 1093. Les autochtones avait longtemps évité cette région entourant Turtle Mountain ("La montagne qui marche" selon leur légende). La nouvelle ville de Frank a été érigée juste à l'Ouest des millions de rochers énormes qui ont dévalé le flanc de la montage comme autant billes gigantesques il n'y a même pas 100 ans. En pédalant près des amas rocheux, je questionnais un peu le choix de l'emplacement. On a la mémoire collective très courte et pas du tout à l'échelle de la Terre, et il me semble qu'on répète souvent les mêmes erreurs. Tout de même, je souhaite une bien meilleure chance aux résidants actuels de Frank que les ~76 qui y ont péri en 1903.

C'est FOU comme ça avance!! Je réussis à peine à me contenir, j'en reviens pas comment le montage va bien, progresse à une vitesse fulgurante. Je fais tout au fur et à mesure ou presque, c'est-à-dire le mixing audio, les transitions, la musique et ça donne quelque chose de vraiiiment beau! Je viens de finir une séquence de toute beauté, qui longe le lac supérieur jusqu'à Thunder Bay, ensuite un court passage aux "states" et le retour dans les prairies manitobaines. On est rendu en Saskatchewan, dans les champs parmi les élévateurs à grain, juste pour dire.

Je suis allé voir Xavier Caféïne en show pour la première fois au Café Campus hier pis c'tait pas mal bon!! Merci encore Xavier et le band pour votre toune!

Goddamn crazy how fast things have been going! I am just tearing through this editing process, kinda doing everything as I go along: sound mixing, transitions, music. I just finished a great sequence, from the shores of Lake Superior to Thunder Bay and beyond, through the states and right back to the Manitoban prairies.

I'm just beginning Saskatchewan now and holy $?& is there ever a surprise coming up!! Those of you who have read the McGill Daily article (http://www.mcgilldaily.com/view.php?aid=4734) might know who I'm talking about. Otherwise, wait and see!

Night scenes, and more !

The movie is now in Sault-Ste-Marie, the most exciting industrial town this side of the rocky mountains! I've spent a few nights at the monitor, headphones wrapped tight around my head, immersing myself in the video footage of Northern Ontario and putting together something pretttttty nice for you all. I also met a member from the band Pony Up last thursday at the launch of their new album - it rocks! They reiterarted their support for the movie project... so thanks a lot to those guys (girls).

I even went all out and made a little trailer video of this part of the adventure. I'll post it soon!

Le film avance tellement vite, qu'il est déjà rendu à Sault-Ste-Marie... ville palpitante (et redoutée au hockey mineur). J'ai passé quelques nuits blanche à ma table de montage, mes écouteurs bien scellés sur ma tête pour bien m'immerger dans la bande vidéo du Nord Ontarien. Très satisfaisant, comme progrès.

J'ai même "patenté" un petit preview que j'aimerais vous montrer dans les prochains jours. À venir très bientôt!

De l'aide bienvenue!

Rebonjour! Je viens d'avoir un vraiment bon coup de main des gens super cools de l'ONF: l'ACIC (Aide au cinéma indépendant canadien) on accepté ma demande d'aide technique, alors je peux maintenant compter sur eux pour m'aider en cas de pépins techniques. C'est pas mal soulageant: ils m'ont aidé à faire un backup complet de mon oeuvre vidéo, comme ça j'aurai pas travaillé pour rien en cas de bris/vol de mon matériel.

Et laissez-moi vous dire que je travaille très fort ces jours ci.. l'ouverture du film est super bien réussie à mon avis.. on peut facilement se mettre dedans - l'esprit du trip, du voyage écolo, etc! Alors sans plus tarder je retourne à mon montage. À la prochaine!

Good news again for the project! The people at the National Film Board of Canada decided to lend me technical assistance with the movie project. They helped back-up of all my work in case my hard drive crashed or got stolen, or other such really shitty things that can really slow down a movie project and lead to severe depression (for me). Luckily, thanks to the people at l'ACIC (Assistance for Canadian Independant Cinema) those worries are things of the past and I can work in peace of mind!

Speaking of work, i've been really going for it these past couple weeks and i'm really proud of the results so far. The opening 10 mins of the film are much refined and really easy to get into and understand the philosophy behind that way of life (ecological awareness, self-determination). So after sharing this great news, it it's back to the cutting room for me! Until next time! =) LP

Good news! Xavier Caféine and Grimskunk both agreed to lend their their music to the movie! "Montréal" is an awesome track I discovered on CISM the student radio at Université de M (check it out on 89.3 fm or www.cismfm.qc.ca). The song fits wickedly with one of the opening scenes i already worked out: it shows the fast-paced city life compared to lots of other places we visited on the way West that were a little more.... laid-back, so to speak.

The song Seventh Wave by Grimskunk is one of my personal faves. The words are great and fit well with my idea of adventure: which is " Take the time to go where you want to be. "

Catch the Seventh wave
Leave it all behind!

But I'm not saying yet where I plan to use it in the film: it's gonna be a surprise!

Esplendido! Xavier Caféine et Grimskunk ont tous deux dit Oui à ce que j'utilise leurs tounes dans le film! J'en suis vraiment content et je pourrai continuer en toute quiétude avec mon plan d'utiliser l'excellente toune "Montréal" sur une scène d'intro qui montre bien la frénésie de la ville.. à comparer à d'autres endroit pas mal plus tranquilles du pays qu'on a découverts en roulant! C'est une chanson super que j'ai découvert sur la radio de l'Université de Montréal, CISM 89.3 fm pour ceux qui connaissent pas encore cette merveilleuse source de musique qui marche pas juste sur l'$$$, comme certaines autres!

La chansons Seventh Wave de Grimskunk est une de mes préférées depuis longtemps. Ça ira vraiment bien avec une des plus belles scènes du film - mais je vous dis pas encore laquelle! ;)

opening scenes - pré-départ

J'ai effectué récemment à la sueur de mon front les 6 premières minutes du film, qui correspondent à la quasi-totalité des scènes avant-départ. C'est beaucoup de travail car ces scènes ont été tournées en ordre pas toujours séquentiel et ça prend un assemblage bien méticuleux pour bien représenter l'état d'âme qui caractérisait ces moments-là! Ce début de film est donc assez "artistique" plûtot que purement documentaire.

J'y ai entremis une scène tournée à Tofino, sur la côte Ouest, qui correspond magnifiquement à un rêve que j'ai eu à l'hiver 2005, au stade très embryonnaire du projet. J'ai su alors qu'il me fallait retrouver ce lieu qui pour moi restera toujours sacré!

Il y a des accélérés qui montrent bien (je crois) le rythme de vie citadine; avec des scènes de vélo urbain bien evidemment. Cela contraste assez radicalement au mode de vie complètement différent qu'on a dû adopter dès les premières journées de route. J'attends encore l'autorisation des groupes Xavier Caféine et Grimskunk pour utiliser leurs excellentes chansons dans le film (la toune "Montréal" de X.C. à environ 3 minutes du début, et la toune "Seventh Wave" de Grimskunk à la toute fin du film). Les gens d'Indica Records devrait fournir une réponse très bientôt et j'espère très fort que celle-ci sera affirmative! Alors attendons encore un peu.

Bref, il ne me manque pas d'idées et j'essaie quelques trucs, je corriger parfois le tir pour faire exactement le style de film que je veux. C'est long, mais le fun!

J'envisage d'ailleurs de faire un petit atelier de montage vidéo auquel vous serez tous et toutes invités.. on pourrait donc travailler ensemble sur quelques minutes de film tout en apprenant la base du montage numérique... ainsi qu'une très spéciale "preview" de ce qui est déjà fait! Je planifie ça pour la semaine du 10 au 17 avril, alors je vous redonne des nouvelles au + c%$$@*!

Over the past few days i've painstakingly edited the first 6 minutes of the movie; about the duration of the opening scenes. It was quite a lot of work putting all the scenes in order (upwards of about 50 different ones) and making something really coherent and fun to watch that sufficiently explains the meaning of the trip, at least as I saw it before we left! So the effect as it is now is pretty interesting, to say the least! =)

I fit in a scene shot from within the misty and mysterious coastal rainforest near Tofino (Vancouver Island), that fits really well with a dream i had last winter, just before we really started planning the trip together.

There's some really good fast-motion scenes that represent the fast-paced exciting city life most of us (i think) live in contrast to the changes we all underwent just a few days into the trip, already in bushy Northern Ontario with the city far behind. I'm still waiting for permission from a few local bands to use their awesome tracks for a few scenes in the movie. So let's hope for the best.. because their music really is great and would fit well with the idea of the movie.

So, ideas abound.. i'm trying lots of things and seeing what works best. It might take a while, but i'll have fun every step of the way!

In fact, i'd love to get an editing workshop together next week (Apr 10-17) so we can get together, discuss the basics of editing, share ideas and maybe even show you a VERY special preview of the edited scenes so far! I'll get in touch with all the Montréalers who are on the mailing list ASAP, with a more specific invitation!

Montage: c'est parti !

The show's on the road!

After a few months of scene cataloguing, tentative screenplay-writing and general computer setup mumbo-jumbo, the painstaking but exciting editing process for ONE LESS CAR has finally begun in earnest! The opening scenes are all done, nicely stitched together and spiced up with songs from our very own Pony Up, Les Cowboys Fringants and Naked N' Happy, three rockin' local bands who have lent their art to the movie project. A great big shout out to these generous artists!

I'm now working on a little voice-over to open up and explain the question everyone has been asking the biker crew: "Why do something crazy like bike across an enormous country?". Because sometimes, you just gotta move! And we all know good ideas can go a long way, if you got the strength to carry it through.

If you're as excited as I am to see this film when it's edited to perfection.. I'll soon have a great surprise for you! In the meantime, visit here often for editing updates, anecdotes and free discussion on eco-travel. Feel free to post your own thoughts, comments and words of encouragement!

Après quelques mois de repos, de repérage de scènes et l'écriture d'un début de script, le montage du film UNE AUTO DE MOINS a finalement décollé en grand! Les scènes d'ouverture sont complétées, bien rattachées et agrémentées de l'excellente musique de nos Cowboys Fringants, Naked N' Happy et Pony Up, trois groupes locaux qui rockent et qui prêtent généreusement leur art à la réalisation du film. Encore mille fois merci à ces vrais artistes!

J'enrégistre présentement un petit narratif d'ouverture pour expliquer le pourquoi de la chose: Pourquoi parcourir 5000km en vélo commes des fous. Parce que le monde change vite et la planète a besoin de gens qui bougent - qui s'impliquent et changent le monde à leur façon par leur bonne attitude. En gros, voilà l'idée de base derrière le projet, et celle qui présentera donc aussi le film.

Si vous avez hâte de voir ce film d'aventure fou quand il sera complété, alors j'aurai bientôt toute une bonne surprise pour vous!
